Here’s the latest news from our Artistic Director Becca ?
Hello everyone! It’s been a while since I wrote here – how are you all doing? I’m so glad to see the longer evenings arrive – spring is certainly springing and I can feel it!
Things in Team Scary are very exciting at the moment. Thanks to the Heritage Lottery Fund, we are embarking on our biggest project yet, and the planning is well underway, with events starting to take shape. We’re preparing to be at Leeds Lit Fest with The Full Brontë AND Out of The Darkness. And we’re preparing a northern remount of ‘Fire’ in collaboration with Historic Royal Palaces about the life of Indian Suffragette Sophia Duleep Singh. It’s all go!
For our Greenham project, we will be traversing the country, talking to people living in areas to which Greenham Women ‘carried Greenham home’. We’ll be visiting Wales, the Isle of Wight and Glasgow amongst many others currently being lined up – do let us know if you’d like us to come to a town or city near you!
We know that many Greenham Women truly Carried Greenham Home, and did incredible things after their time at camp. We want to track those women, find out what they did, and celebrate the impact of Greenham across the UK. We’re planning memory sharing sessions, herstorian training and the development of an online resource which will allow people to both record impacts made by Greenham Women, and search those recorded by others.
And Leeds Lit Fest – we love this festival! We are so thrilled by what they’re programmed from us this time; Shazz Andrew will be getting the band back together for possibly our daftest scary little show The Full Brontë, always a hoot to do in actual Brontë country, and I’ll be in the stunning Leeds Library for a chat about my Greenham book (like a real author!) with readings, songs on my uke-a-lady and real life Greenham Women!
We’re really excited about taking ‘Fire’ to West Yorkshire in July to share Sophia’s inspirational story with young people in the North. We have a casting call open right now!
As well as these events, we’re spending a week in Cornwall, basing ourselves at the Jupiter Gallery in Newlyn. We’ll be hosting ‘Common Ground‘, a memory sharing exhibition about the Greenham Common Women’s Peace Camp from the 28th February until the 4th March. We’re hosting a Greenham Singing Workshop on the first night there, the 28th, and we’ll close out the week with a double feature ‘Greenham on Film‘.
