Liz O’Rourke, Redruth

Liz O’Rourke shares a charming story about how her parents met at the Whitsun fair in Redruth. On their first date, her mother was actually on a double date with someone else but ended up swapping dates with her future father. During the fair, her father convinced her mother to consult a fortune teller, who was asked how many children she would have. The fortune teller had a donkey, which stamped its foot three times in response, and indeed, her mother went on to have three children.

Liz fondly recalls visiting the Whitsun fair regularly until it eventually stopped, joking about the infamous “Lovers Lane.” She also recounts a lighter, humorous story about her father’s youthful antics, where he would steal cabbages from a farmer who had planted an extra row, adding a playful touch to the tale.
