John Cause, Grampound

In this tense and dramatic story, John Cause recounts a harrowing experience involving a car accident. While driving, John approached a left-hand bend when the back end of the car suddenly swung out, sending him into a dangerous position. As the car veered off, a rock on the verge helped push the vehicle up, but on the other side of the verge, there was a steep drop. In that moment, John remembers thinking, “This isn’t going to be any good for my looks!”—a lighthearted thought during a terrifying experience.

The car finally came to a stop, leaving John trapped inside. A few people quickly gathered around, and one man, seeing John’s situation clearly, carefully guided him backwards through a small gap to help him escape. However, his passenger’s arm was stuck, complicating matters further. The situation quickly escalated, and both road and air ambulances were called to the scene. The passenger, injured and unable to be freed easily, was flown to Derriford Hospital in the air ambulance for treatment.

John’s recounting of the accident captures the shock and relief he felt in the midst of such a dangerous situation, as well as the swift response of bystanders and emergency services that ultimately ensured both he and his passenger received the help they needed.
