7th April 2021 @ 7:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Mark your diaries! The fifth episode of Salon de la Vie Season Three on the 7th April 2021 is all about the wonderful Daphne du Maurier!

✮ April 7th 2021

✮ 7.30pm

✮  YouTube

Join your host Rebecca as she explores the life and imagination of Daphne du Maurier!

Born into a dramatic family – in every sense! – and drawn to Cornwall at an early age, Daphne’s writing continues to amuse and enthral with her vast cast of characters encompassing actors, pirates, lovers, murderers, conmen, druggies and violent birds!

There’ll be readings from her novels and short stories and songs from Kate Bush and Amanda Palmer, as well as chat about the colourful du Maurier clan – and of course, we welcome you to bring your favourite from the bar and chat to Rebecca on the message board during the show.

Did you know?

–  When Daphne was little she often role-played as her swashbuckling alter-ego, Eric!

– Daphne was a huge fan of Emily Bronte; her first novel is influenced by her admiration for Wuthering Heights

– Daphne is rumoured to have had an affair with Prince Philip (which we really hope isn’t true…)

Get into the mood with our specially curated playlist which pays homage to Daphne’s great love of Cornwall and the hungry, surrounding sea; digging into film scores and other pieces inspired by her stories; taking in some of her Desert Island Discs choices and nodding to some lesser-known aspects as her life – ultimately plunging into a dark morass of suspicion, betrayal, jealousy and murder (with a little levity along the way), to celebrate the unforgettable atmosphere and variety of her greatest works…

About Salon de la Vie

Hosted by Scary Little Girls’ Rebecca Mordan, Salon de la Vie is a series of fortnightly 15 – 20 minute extravaganzas of songs, storytelling, merriment and conversation, focusing each time on an awe-inspiring, remarkable and brave human from the world of film, music, literature and history, drawing parallels with the achievements of activists today, to celebrate how people positively embody the change they want to see in the world, for themselves and for others. And we’re super proud that each salon has a custom illustration provided by the wonderful Jacky Fleming.

Come along every other Wednesday evening to join in with our singing, celebration and joy!

We’d like to thank our amazing funders Arts Council England for supporting this project.
