Margaret Philip’s fondly recalls her very first summer job at the age of 13 or 14, arranged through her best friend’s father, a local school biology teacher. The unusual task involved collecting specimens from a nearby pond, without the luxury of protective gloves. Armed only with jam jars, the pair earned a small payment for each one they collected — a memorable and rather unconventional start to working life.
