Going dairy free doesn’t have to mean the end of the cheeseboard! Meet Kinda…
Kinda is an award winning dairy-free cheese producer, based in Somerset. Started in London, in October 2017, they carefully culture cashews to create a range of classic cheeses to fulfill your salad, sandwich or cooking needs, with occasional specials to tickle those tastebuds, too.
As a vegan, female led company, we’re always keen to meet like minded organisations so we were thrilled to find that not only are the cheeses great but Kinda was started by one woman, Ellie. Making, first, in her Islington kitchen, and selling at local London markets, Kinda is now produced in a commercial vegan cheese kitchen in North Somerset and is stocked by organic delivery company Abel and Cole, as well as in indie delis across the country, food markets in the south of England, and even Selfridges, in London.
The range covers all the basics we’d want to see – Farmhouse is just crying out for a swipe of pickle and two slabs of bread. Greek would like to meet tomatoes, cucumber and a few slivers of red onion to be your next lunchtime salad. For those who have tried every Parmesan alternative under the sun, The Italian – made from almonds this time and with 94% five star reviews – is your next stop.
Perhaps their most ambitious cheese is Mozzalloumi – yep, you’ve guessed it. Somewhere between Mozzarella and Halloumi, this cheese was invented by Kinda to keep its shape, go crispy AND stay melty. It’s a breakthrough!
The cheeses have won 9 Great Taste Awards and a Taste of the West Gold Award, and the website provides recipes, and a link to KindAcademy, Ellie’s Online Vegan Cheese Masterclass, where you can learn to make your own delicious vegan cheese at home. If you get really keen, you can also join Ellie for cheesemaking classes in person at River Cottage.
Kinda believe that giving up dairy shouldn’t be compromising on taste and work to produce authentic cheesy flavours from real natural ingredients. We love what they’re doing and we love their cheeses. We hope you enjoy them if you try them too.
In case it needs to be said – all products are made from nuts and so are unsuitable for those with nut allergies
