Geoff Beare, Padstow

Geoff Beare recalls a call-out to St Eval where the RAF houses were still standing. He and his team were dispatched to a field fire, which turned out to be stubble burning set by the farmer. Upon informing control that the fire was a controlled burn, they were still instructed to put it out as the farmer was not present. As Geoff and his team made their way across the field to tackle the fire, they unexpectedly encountered a WWII-era tank trap, which caused six fire beaters to fly up into the air when they reached it, adding an unexpected twist to their firefighting efforts.
