Join us online at 19.30 \nWatch the Salon on YouTube Support us on Ko-Fi \nThe Late Great Nina Simone \nJoin us to pay homage to singer\, musician and civil rights campaigner Nina Simone. If I were a boy\, it wouldn’t matter so much\, but I’m a girl and in front of the public all the time wide open for them to jeer and approve of or disapprove of.” \nNina’s song ‘To Be Young\, Gifted and Black” was recorded in memory of her friend Lorraine Hansberry\, the first African American female author to have a play performed on Broadway. \nAbout Salon de la Vie \nHosted by Scary Little Girls’ Rebecca Mordan\, Salon de la Vie is a series of fortnightly 15 – 20 minute extravaganzas of songs\, storytelling\, merriment and conversation\, focusing each time on an awe-inspiring\, remarkable and brave human from the world of film\, music\, literature and history\, drawing parallels with the achievements of activists today\, to celebrate how people positively embody the change they want to see in the world\, for themselves and for others. And we’re super proud that each salon has a custom illustration provided by the wonderful Jacky Fleming. \nCome along every other Wednesday evening to join in with our singing\, celebration and joy! \nWe’d like to thank our amazing funders Arts Council England for supporting this project \nAbout Scary Little Girls \nScary Little Girls is a vibrant\, hard-working production hub whose commitment and passion for theatrical and artistic storytelling is borne out by the variety of scary little work we have created and the support we have from our scary little artists and audiences.

Join us online at 19.30 \nWatch the Salon on YouTube Support us on Ko-Fi \nNo More Single Story! \nIn this Salon we look at the power of story to break the dignity of a people\, or repair that broken dignity to paraphrase the fabulous Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. And we’ll be exploring stories *about* stories too. \nDid you know? – Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie was obsessed with trying ginger beer as a little girl reading English children’s books?! \nOr that when Carly Simon wrote You’re So Vain not one but at least three of her famous ex boyfriends tried to claim the song was about them! \nSawing a woman in half has been a popular magic trick since the 1920’s\, but it was magician Dorothy Dietrich\, who established herself as a leading magician as a teenager in the 1980’s. SUMMARY:Salon de la Vie - Season Two - Billie Holiday
DESCRIPTION:Salon de la Vie presents…. Billie Holiday!\nJoin us on YouTube from 7.30 pm on the 22nd July \nWatch the Salon on YouTube Support us on Ko-Fi \nLoved then and now for her evocative singing and her skills in improvisation\, Billie Holliday changed the jazz scene forever. \nBillie tried to break into show business initially as a dancer and after one failed audition the pianist took pity on her and asked her if she could sing; Billie immediately bust out tunes by her favourite Bessie Smith and was hired as a singer forthwith! \nHer career blossomed. As well as being ‘Lady Day’ the performer\, Billie was a gifted songwriter and a brave voice of the civil rights movement – she made the song ‘Strange Fruit’ famous singing it at Cafe Society despite warnings from those around her of possible retaliation against her for promoting the song; it had originally been written as a poem by Jewish school teacher Abel Meeropol. \nBillie was also a champion of her beloved gang of dogs!  Her large canine family encompassed all shapes and sizes\, from a tiny coat-pocket poodle\, through a beautiful beagle\, chirpy chihuahuas\, a gigantic Great Dane and more – but her favourite was a boxer named Mister. \nWe’re exploring Billie’s life in our opening night of Salon de la Vie Season Two and we’re excited to share that special guest performer Kudznanyi Chiwawa will join salon host Rebecca Mordan to celebrate Billie and her legacy through performances of her work\, chats about her life and readings from her contemporaries like Dorothy Parker. \nGrab your Manhattan and let’s bring both the glamour and the politics of the Jazz Era to life and raise a glass to our first heroine of season two! SUMMARY:Salon de la Vie - Suffrage on Stage
DESCRIPTION:It’s 1908. Over dinner at a table at the Criterion Restaurant in London\, two actresses hatch a plan… \nNo longer content with ‘adding to the gaiety of the nation while suffering from great wrongs arising out of sex disability’\, the time had come for change… The Actresses Franchise League was born and soon boasted such names as Ellen Terry\, Cicely Hamilton\, Edith Craig\, JM Barrie and George Bernard Shaw amongst its supporters. These suffragette sisters used the tricks of the trade to help win the vote! \nAt our Salon celebrating them\, our host will regale you with songs and script from their campaigns. Join in and speak your mind in a singalong with your sisters\, and use our songsheet above to join in on the night! Huge thanks to the supremely talented Claire Ingleheart for this recording of ‘Let Us All Speak Our Minds’ to help you learn the tune! \nhttps://scarylittlegirls.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Let-Us-All-Speak-Our-Minds-2-verses-1.mp3\nSalon de la Vie is Scary Little Girls’ contribution to fun and feminism in a time of COVID-19! \nOur fortnightly 15 -20 minute extravaganzas of songs\, storytelling\, merriment and conversation\, focus each time on an awe-inspiring\, remarkable and brave woman from the world of film\, music\, literature and history\, drawing parallels with the achievements of activists today\, to celebrate how people positively embody the change they want to see in the world\, for themselves and for others. SUMMARY:Salon de la Vie - from Freya to Fairy Tale
DESCRIPTION:When did women become so passive in stories?  \nAncient tales and sagas feature active\, dynamic women\, as powerful and creative as the men. More modern tales have relegated women to more passive roles – helpmeets\, companions\, and devices to move the story along. \nIn our Salon on the 20th May\, we’ll be exploring this trend – when and how did it happen? Where did some of our modern characters come from\, and what’s their origin story? Did you know that ‘Anonymous’ was usually a woman’? That Snow White started out as the Nordic Goddess Freya? And have you heard how Cornish fairytale heroine Duffy beat the Devil? \nWe’d love to hear from you in advance – what’s your favourite feminist fairy (or other? ) tale? Message us! \nJoin us on Facebook Live from 7.30 on the 20th May for 20 minutes of fabulous feminist fun – mix up an Apple Martini in advance to get in the mood! \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nSalon de la Vie is Scary Little Girls’ contribution to fun and feminism in a time of COVID-19! SUMMARY:Salon de la Vie - Yo Her Her and a Bottle of Rum!
DESCRIPTION:‘What do I lack?’ \nWar correspondent\, author\, journalist and criminologist\, this ‘lady reporter’ was fascinated by those who kill and the criminal justice (or injustice) around them. One of her works\, still influential today\, divided killers into six categories\, based on their purported reasons for killing. Another featured a charismatic pirate\, Captain Lovel\, captaining the good ship Piskie – but did what the captain lacked reveal something about who they really were…? \nThis week’s Salonista also… \n1.  Wrote the ripping yarn Moonraker about piracy\, cross dressing and the Haitian Revolution!\n\n2.  Was part of the Newlyn School of Cornish Artists\n\n3. At the outbreak of WW1\, reported from the front line in Belgium and then Holland and France to send vital info on the state of the Red Cross hospitals there\, and the Women’s Army \nOh – and she had a famous uncle. But less about him\, find out more about her! Join us for a Pirate Mule and a bite sized chunk of feminist fun on Wednesday 6th May\, from 7.30\, on Facebook Live! Get in the mood early and message us your favourite female pirate or criminal – Anne Bonny? Sayyida al Hurra? Ching Shih? \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nSalon de la Vie is Scary Little Girls’ contribution to fun and feminism in a time of COVID-19! SUMMARY:Greenham Exhibition (Nottingham)
DESCRIPTION:Between August and December 2019\, Greenham Women Everywhere will be taking a pop-up exhibition on tour around the UK. \nThe exhibition will showcase some original photographs created by our team\, and also archival material\, both visual and written\, which we have collated during the project. We’ll be playing you soundscapes created by artists we have worked with which give a cross-section of the oral testimonies we have taken\, as well as using some of the wonderful Greenham music. \nThere will be a video installation which explores what political concerns and campaigns the Greenham Women are taking on today\, and there will even be a chance to meet some of the Greenham Women themselves – many will be hosting the exhibitions with us. \nAll set in a Greenham-inspired tent\, this exhibition really allows you to get an intimate look at the sights and sounds of the camp\, gives voice to these radical women and asks you what change you want to see in the world. \nDo keep an eye on the exhibition schedule for our panel talks – we’ll be running several. These are wonderful opportunities to hear from a range of Greenham Women and ask your own questions about life on camp\, as well as talk directly to the project managers about the project itself. \nOur team has been led in the exhibition design by Rachael Miles\, an artist and Senior Lecturer at The University of The West of England. \n \nWe need your support: visit our Greenham GoFundMe!
