SUMMARY:Salon de la Vie Season 5 - Vesta Tilley
DESCRIPTION:Join us on October 20th for our celebration of Vesta Tilley\, a hugely popular turn of the century music hall and vaudeville star and one of the era’s best-known male impersonators. \nTilley – real name Matilda Alice Powles – became a professional entertainer at the age of six and performed as a variety of male characters throughout her career\, spoofing famous men and making fun of authority figures and the upper classes. \nShe often played the role of ‘principle boy’ in pantomimes which suited her cheeky\, dandyish style – and of course a great opportunity for sending up gendered modes of behaviour. \nWe’ll be joined by special guest\, actor Anna Tolputt who will sing one of Tilley’s iconic (and transgressive) turns and tell us about the woman who was variously known as ‘The London Idol’\, ‘England’s greatest recruiting sergeant’ – and who was a big influence on 20th century drag king culture. \nDid you know? \n★ At the height of her fame\, Vesta Tilley was the highest earning woman in England \n★ Although Tilley’s shows were strictly family-friendly\, the sight of a woman in trousers on stage at the Royal Command Performance so shocked Queen Mary that she hid behind her programme \n★ During the First World War\, Tilley ran military recruitment drives at her shows: in fact\, she enlisted so many men in Hackney that they became known as “The Vesta Tilley Platoon” \nBook your tickets here \nLink will be sent to all ticketholders 30 mins before event starts \nAbout Salon de la Vie \nHosted by Scary Little Girls’ Rebecca Mordan\, Salon de la Vie is a series of fortnightly 15 – 20 minute extravaganzas of songs\, storytelling\, merriment and conversation\, focusing each time on an awe-inspiring\, remarkable and brave human from the world of film\, music\, literature and history\, drawing parallels with the achievements of activists today\, to celebrate how people positively embody the change they want to see in the world\, for themselves and for others. And we’re super proud that each salon has a custom illustration provided by the wonderful Jacky Fleming. \nCome along to join in with our singing\, celebration and joy! \nWe’d like to thank our amazing funders Arts Council England for supporting this project. \nHuge thanks to DJ Stegosaurus for creating a fantastic playlist on Spotify to accompany this Season! \nAbout Scary Little Girls \nScary Little Girls is a vibrant\, hard-working production hub whose commitment and passion for theatrical and artistic storytelling is borne out by the variety of scary little work we have created and the support we have from our scary little artists and audiences. \n \n

SUMMARY:Protest and Revolution
DESCRIPTION:Following the release of Briar March’s new documentary about the Greenham Common Women’s Peace Camp\, Mothers of the Revolution\, SLG’s Artistic Director Rebecca Mordan is hosting this panel discussion between protesters young and old: women who took part in the peace camp in the 1980s and 90s (including the legendary Rebecca Johnson who features in the film) and young activists who joined the Greenham Women Everywhere recreation of the march from Cardiff to Greenham Common last month\, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of this historic protest. \nThey will also be discussing the upcoming short film Protest by Barbara Santi\, which follows three young female activists who joined the recent march\, connecting the #MeToo generation with the women who paved their way:  two of these young women\, Poppy and Xanthe\, will also be on the panel. \nMore info and book tickets (free) \nFrom the BFI website: \n“Mothers of the Revolution (in LFF 2021 Journey Strand) tells the story of a group of women who opposed the siting of cruise missiles in the UK and set up the Greenham women’s peace camp\, the biggest female-led protest since women’s suffrage. Forty years on\, young activists who are standing up to fight for the issues of their time – climate\, race and inequality of all kinds – join us for a conversation with some of the women who took part in the peace camp to discuss their experience of Greenham Common\, connecting the #MeToo generation with the women who paved their way.” \n

SUMMARY:Salon de la Vie - Season Four - The Woman’s Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Season Four of Salon de la Vie will be a collaboration with Dr Naomi Paxton on everything you didn’t know about the suffragettes and their creative campaigning!  We’ll combine recorded extracts\, songs\, special guests and live shows in this season to celebrate the wild\, wonderful\, wise and witty women of the first wave. \nJoin us on July 14th for The Woman’s Theatre. Get your stout and stormy cocktail in your hand for an exploration of the way theatre could have\, and occasionally was\, when women had their say! Here we will look at the way suffrage campaigners imagined a theatre they could be part of\, including female producers and playwrights\, crèches\, and an end to the casting couch… so much to admire and yet to apply to the modern mainstream… \nWe’ll start by getting fun and frisky with songs from Marie Lloyd and then finishing with a delve into the world of those women\, both in the Suffrage movement and without\, who campaigned against the rapidly industrialising sex trade in the Victorian era – including a little known early version of The House of the Rising Sun from a woman’s point of view! \nDid you know? \n★Marie Lloyd was not allowed to tour the USA due to what they termed her ‘moral turpitude’! \n★Thanks to the Suffrage movement\, women imagined theatre’s that might work better for them all over they world\, from London and America to Denmark and Japan \n★Versions of The Rising Sun go back centuries as a ballad\, with musicologist’s tracing it back to 16th century English bawdy houses and Louis XIV’s France. \nAbout Salon de la Vie \nHosted by Scary Little Girls’ Rebecca Mordan\, Salon de la Vie is a series of fortnightly 15 – 20 minute extravaganzas of songs\, storytelling\, merriment and conversation\, focusing each time on an awe-inspiring\, remarkable and brave human from the world of film\, music\, literature and history\, drawing parallels with the achievements of activists today\, to celebrate how people positively embody the change they want to see in the world\, for themselves and for others. Salon de la Vie is back for Season Three on the 10th February 2021 with a Valentine Special! \n✮ February 10th 2021 \n✮ 7.30pm \n✮  YouTube  \nJoin us on the 10th February for an alternative and feminist take on Valentines Day and all things romantic love.  \nWe’ve got nothing against love – in fact\, we love it – but Valentine’s Day in particular can feel a bit commercial and sickly… or if you’re single\, it can be a slap in the face. \nSo\, our Valentine special Salon de la Vie is going to be a very different take on romance – less hearts\, flowers and Hallmark\, more celebration of all of the catastrophes and insanities of love! \nArtistic Director Rebecca Mordan is going to be looking at some of the myths and stereotypes about the season through a feminist lens and with tongue firmly in cheek. We’ll be deconstructing some traditional romantic tropes and presenting some feisty alternatives! Expect some bitter and twisted stories along with the happy endings\, where\, while love wins\, Prince Charming is not the end game. \nWe’re delighted to welcome back our friend Kudzanayi Chiwawa who will make a special appearance performing a poem called Humanity\, Gaia’s Young Lover\, Replies to Her Break-up Letter by Dorothea Smartt. \nPeople at all points of the romantic spectrum are welcome – so whether you are in\, out of or over love\, this is the night for you. So tear up your cards and bin the flowers\, because after this evening you’ll never see Valentine’s Day the same way again! \nGet into the mood with our specially curated Valentine’s playlist\, celebrating love in all its guises – not just the mushy hearts-for-eyes kind\, but also the unrequited\, the messy\, the vengeful and the self-love! \n \nAbout Salon de la Vie \nHosted by Scary Little Girls’ Rebecca Mordan\, Salon de la Vie is a series of fortnightly 15 – 20 minute extravaganzas of songs\, storytelling\, merriment and conversation\, focusing each time on an awe-inspiring\, remarkable and brave human from the world of film\, music\, literature and history\, drawing parallels with the achievements of activists today\, to celebrate how people positively embody the change they want to see in the world\, for themselves and for others. And we’re super proud that each salon has a custom illustration provided by the wonderful Jacky Fleming. \nCome along every other Wednesday evening to join in with our singing\, celebration and joy! \nWe’d like to thank our amazing funders Arts Council England for supporting this project \nAbout Scary Little Girls \nScary Little Girls is a vibrant\, hard-working production hub whose commitment and passion for theatrical and artistic storytelling is borne out by the variety of scary little work we have created and the support we have from our scary little artists and audiences.
