Salon de la Vie – Happy birthday Mary Wollstonecraft!

27th April 2020 @ 7:30 pm - 7:50 pm

Tonight’s Salon de la Vie is an extra one, and an extra special one!

Today is the 261st anniversary of Mary Wollstonecraft’s birthday and we are celebrating this momentous day by hosting a joyous celebratory Salon.

As well as this, we’ll be exploring the brand new today Wollstonecraft Walks app voiced by our own Rebecca Mordan!

The app allows you to take a walk around the birthplace of feminism, Newington Green, following in the footsteps of the champion of girls education, Mary Wollstonecraft herself, sharing details of her life and times as well as her impact on women, politics and 21st century society and culture. The app contains…
  • WOLLSTONECRAFT WALK GUIDE: Take a guided audio walk around Newington Green stopping off at significant locations (The Cobblers, Newington Green School, Lady Mildmay pub) and listen to the words of iconic feminist writers whilst hearing about the herstory of Newington Green.
  • Podcasts – hosted by Marina Garvey Birch and Erica McKoy: speaking to local people about their experience of the walks, readings from Maya Angelou, Mary Wollstonecraft, Virginia Woolf, Michelle Obama BTS convo with Anna Birch (Fragments & Monuments) and Rebecca Mordan (Scary Little Girls).
  • Fragments & Monuments performance and film archive (2000-2020)
  • School Assembly resources
There are also Mary themed children’s activities courtesy of Unity Arts and a wonderful anthology curated by Professor Emma Clery with contributions from activists, feminist and academics today celebrating Mary’s legacy available at NGMH.org.uk, nearer the time.
